I found remarks by Emily F. Webb (Readers' Forum, Jan. 15) to be very revealing. Does she think that all couples dating exclusively for a determined amount of time should receive all the benefits available to married couples? In our society, marriage is still the only suitable proof of commitment for heterosexual couples to qualify for unique government benefits. The level of commitment with someone you don't yet want to marry simply falls short of the well-established bar. Mr. Becker has no business moving it.
