SOUTH SALT LAKE — A man police believe broke into a business here early Wednesday was arrested by officers.

Police responded to an alarm at a business near 3150 South and 600 West about 7 a.m. Officers initially did not find any suspects or signs of forced entry. But after an owner also responded to the scene and let them in, they heard a back door slam closed, said South Salt Lake police detective Gary Keller.

Officers ran outside to see a man crawling through a hole in a chain-link fence that he had cut to get in, and run down a set of railroad tracks while carrying something in his hands, Keller said.

On the railroad tracks, the man dropped a laptop that he had just stolen from the business as well as frozen food items, according to police. He continued running along 3300 South, under the freeway overpass until he was caught by backup officers near 350 West, Keller said.
