A truckload of stolen shoes has been recovered and two people are behind bars in connection with the theft, the FBI announced Thursday.

A 51-year-old truck driver was supposed to drive a semitrailer full of athletic shoes from Kansas to California but diverted the haul to Salt Lake City where he planned to meet up with a buyer, according to a statement from the FBI.

Agents tracked the load to a home in American Fork, where they found a U-Haul truck filled with shoes and athletic gear. The semitrailer was later found along I-80 in Summit County.

The truck driver, and a 25-year-old woman investigators said was the man's buyer, were booked into the Salt Lake County Jail on Tuesday for investigation of felony theft.

The FBI is looking into the possibility that other individuals were involved in the scheme.
