A man reportedly committed a lewd act near Wasatch Elementary School Friday, and school officials believe it wasn't the first time.

About 10:45 a.m., a young girl on the playground of Wasatch Elementary, near 30 North and 1050 East, noticed a man parked in a car in an adjacent apartment complex, said Salt Lake police spokeswoman Jordan Smith.

The girl couldn't see the man's entire body but noticed he was reclined in the driver's seat, did not have a shirt on, and believed he was naked and committing a lewd act, she said.

The student ran to a nearby teacher who had a cell phone and immediately called police, but the man was gone by the time officers arrived, Salt Lake School District spokesman Jason Olsen said.

The incident was nearly identical to one last year, Olsen said. In each case, the descriptions of the man and the way the incidents happened were "almost exactly the same," he said.

The only description police had of the man Friday was that he had a hairy chest and was a little overweight.

A letter was sent home with students informing parents what had happened, Olsen said. Also, the district was considering making a barrier between the street and the playground, possibly by filling in the slats of the fence so no one could look through, he said.
