"A BOY WITH A RED PARCEL" by Steven Haderlie, Helm Publishing, 197 pages, $10
Three years ago, Steven Haderlie made a goal to write a children's book.
He never thought the idea would really go anywhere. It was just something the former sixth grade teacher had always wanted to do and figured he should try.
About a year ago, and after multiple rejection letters, his story was picked up by a publisher. In September, "A Boy with a Red Parcel" was officially released to the public in Haderlie's debut as an author.
"There's no doubt about it, I'm very happy it's published," said Haderlie, who is now at Utah State University working toward his master of education degree. "The fact I have a published book is a little surreal, but it's becoming more real."
His book is fast-paced and creative. It tells the story of siblings Jeremy, Priscilla and Sandy, who suddenly find themselves in a mysterious and dangerous land called Teradawn. While there, they learn a seemingly magical language and also fight off enemies and make powerful friends.
The only downside of the book is that you're left wanting more. It's a fun adventure story, and Haderlie he is already working on second and third books as sequels to "A Boy with a Red Parcel."
For him, writing the book has been an adventure. Haderlie said he has discovered he loves writing and plans to continue trying to tell stories in the future.
"As I made the goal to write this book, I thought it would be fun and I would just continue teaching," said Haderlie. "What I am finding is that I love to write, too. I'm afraid I might be writing for the rest of my life. Teaching and writing. I think that is a good combination."
Copies of his books are available in Borders and Hastings bookstores and also online.
