An 85-year-old woman was killed in a traffic accident in downtown Salt Lake City on Friday morning.

The woman, whose name was not released Friday pending notification of family members, was northbound on 500 East about 9:30 a.m. and going through the intersection at 600 South, said Salt Lake police spokeswoman Lara Jones. By all witness accounts the woman had the green light, Jones said.

A sport utility vehicle traveling east on 600 South apparently ran the red light and plowed into the woman's vehicle. The impact sent the woman's car over the curb, over the sidewalk and into an iron gate. The car came to rest just as the nose of the vehicle was about to hit an apartment building.

All parties involved in the accident were wearing seat belts, Jones said. The two occupants of the SUV were not injured.

The case will be given to the city prosecutor's office for possible charges.
