Detectives are sifting through charred evidence looking for clues after one or more arsonists dashed through a residential Cottonwood Heights area early Friday setting fires to outside furniture and garbage cans.

Three fires were reported within twenty minutes of each other at separate residences just after 3 a.m.

The arsonist started the first, and largest, blaze to a chair at 7872 S. Chadbourne Dr. (3350 East). Four separate departments dispatched 26 firefighters to battle the flames that burned into a duplex garage. But 10 minutes later, the crew split up to extinguish another fire reported about one-half mile away on a garbage can at 3567 E. Brighton Point Dr. (7490 South).

The third fire on a garbage can, just houses away from the second fire, was at 3613 Brighton Dr.

"That really ties up our resources," said Wade Russell, Unified Fire Authority spokesman. "We'd really like to catch these guys."

Though the arsonist is likely to have driven the burning route, the distance and time line suggests he or she could have been running.

Detectives have no suspects or leads at this time, said Russell.

Fire authorities are asking anyone with information about suspicious persons or vehicles in the area to call 801-743-7200.
