Weber State coach Randy Rahe wasn't exactly jumping for joy after his team's breakthrough win over Long Beach State on Thursday.

Sure, it was nice to see his players come through with a 40-minute effort and even better to pick up a victory. But he kept the win in perspective, as the Wildcats still have a lot of improving to do during what will be a rough nonleague schedule in the next couple of weeks.

Next up for the Wildcats is their third in-state battle of the season when they play at Southern Utah tonight at 7:35.

"This is just one step in getting us in the right direction," Rahe said of his team's win over Long Beach State. "We've got a long ways to go."

Freshman Damian Lillard sparked the Wildcats with 15 points against the 49ers, but several players contributed to the victory. Five players scored in double figures, as Kellen McCoy had 15 points, Daviin Davis had 14, Nick Hansen scored 12 and Kyle Bullinger chipped in 10. It was Weber State's most balanced and complete effort of the season.

"We had a lot of guys step up and play well," Rahe said.

The Wildcats (3-4) will need a similar effort to beat the 3-5 Thunderbirds, who always get up to play Weber State. Southern Utah has won two straight against the Wildcats on its home floor at The Centrum, and three of the past five meetings between the two teams.

The Thunderbirds are led by guard Davis Baker, a transfer from UC Irvine. He's averaging 17.5 points per game and has scored more than 20 points in four contests.

Both teams are battle tested, having played against tough nonleague competition. Southern Utah has lost to Florida and Boise State, but is 2-0 against Summit League teams.
