SEATTLE (AP) — Sigi Schmid was named the first coach of the Seattle Sounders FC on Tuesday, three weeks after leading the Columbus Crew to the Major League Soccer championship.
The 55-year-old Schmid agreed to a multiyear contract with the expansion Sounders, who open training camp in late January and will begin MLS play next March. Terms were not disclosed.
Schmid is the reigning MLS Coach of the Year. His 113 coaching victories rank second in MLS history behind current U.S. national team coach Bob Bradley's 124.
