Rep.-elect Jason Chaffetz, R-Utah, is finishing filling out his 12-member staff, after wading through more than 500 applicants for those few positions.
"I was impressed not only by the sheer number of applicants, but also by the high quality," Chaffetz said. "We were able to choose from the best of the best. The 3rd District is going to be well served by the competent staff we have assembled."
The new hires include Mike Jerman as the new legislative director. Jerman has been the vice president of the Utah Taxpayers Association, doing much of that conservative group's research and analysis on tax issues. He has an executive master of business administration degree from Brigham Young University and a bachelor's from BYU in mechanical engineering.
Alisia Abegg Essig is his new communications director and legislative aide. She has a bachelor's from the University of Utah in communications and political science and is completing a master's in public administration at George Washington University.
Karilyn Henshaw, an Orem native and graduate of Utah Valley University, is the new Washington office manager and scheduler. Fred Ferguson, a Park City native and University of Utah graduate, is a new staff assistant in Washington.
Mary Rice, who worked in television news for several years at stations including KSL and KUTV, is the new public affairs coordinator in Utah. Emily Ellsworth, a UVU graduate, will be the new office manager in Utah. Jennifer Andelin, a BYU graduate and former Utah coordinator for Sister Cities International, will be a field representative in Utah.
Chaffetz previously announced hires for his top three positions. Justin Harding is his new chief of staff; Jennifer Scott is his district director in Utah; and Dell Smith is his deputy district director.
