John Alden Kennicott

John Alden Kennicott, age 84, died peacefully surrounded by his loving family on 19 Feb 2008 of causes incident to age.

Born 15 Oct 1923, in Des Plaines, IL to Walter Cushing and Jean Catherine Johnston Kennicott. He was raised in "The Grove" - the original homestead of his great-grand

parents. The Grove has been designated a National historic landmark in Glenview, IL. From 1941-1965, John was a Marine Aviator, during World War II he flew corsairs with VMF-215 in the South Pacific. He retired at the rank of Major.

After World War II, the swashbuckling fighter pilot moved to Salt Lake City, where he met the love of his life, the feisty registered nurse, Shirley Nelson. They were married 23 Aug 1947. Later sealed in the Los Angeles Temple 18 Aug 1961.

They moved to "The Grove" in 1951, raised their children, returned to Salt Lake City in 1964.

John was baptized into the LDS Church in 1959. He was always happy to be serving and giving to others in any way he could. He served as a tabernacle usher for 20 years. In 1983, he was instrumental in calming opposition to the Chicago Temple that was to be built next to the Grove.

Survived by wife, Shirley; children, Sally (Brent) Stevens, James (Christine), Sharon Kennicott, Sue (Steve) Christensen, Jeffrey (Sherry), Johnni (Stephanie), Jerry (Jenny), 26 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held, Saturday, Feb. 23, 2008, 12:00 noon at the Brighton 6th Ward, 2925 E. Bengal Blvd. (7800 S.). Friends may call Friday, Feb. 22, 2008, at the Cannon Mortuary, 2460 E. Bengal (7600 S.) from 6-8 p.m. and the day of the service at the church from 10:00 - 11:30 a.m. Interment Mountain View Memorial Estates. "Well, down the road I go"
