Yesterday I survived the ordeal of tax preparation with the CPA who has to do my taxes, since I am not bright enough to find my way through the inane maze of tax laws by myself. He informed me that even though my wife and I are retired seasoned citizens — on a fixed and not very high income — we will be shocked by what will be the increase in our 2008 Utah state income taxes. I know that the recently passed 2008 "revenue neutral flat tax" that sailed through the legislature was not supposed to be a big deal since it was revenue neutral, but it is a big deal.
Our CPA's computer program projected that if our 2008 income stays the same as our 2007 income was, the Utah state income tax bite will increase by over $1,800.
These are golden years, but our governments want the gold.
