Service project at U. produces thousands of "basic necessities"
Dozens of receiving blankets and quilts and 9,000 hats for newborns emerged from the efforts of approximately 800 volunteers at the Salt Lake University Institute of Religion earlier this month.
On Feb. 11, the volunteers got together for a service project organized by the University Second Stake. Participants, however, came from not only the University of Utah but also LDS Business College, Salt Lake Community College and the Salt Lake community at large.
The supplies are intended for mothers and infants in developing countries.
"Many babies are born in unsanitary conditions with few, if any, blankets or clothes to keep them warm," said Dana Allison, a project volunteer who addressed the group. "In some instances newspapers are used as receiving blankets to wrap them after birth. Caps and receiving blankets may seem like little things, but to have these basic necessities available is imperative to a healthy beginning in this world. Every baby deserves that."
The supplies were delivered to the LDS Humanitarian Service Center.
Roles open for 'Warrior' revival
A professional revival of "Saturday's Warrior" will commemorate the 35th anniversary of the LDS musical.
Music-theatre actors are needed for the production, scheduled for June at Cottonwood High School in Salt Lake City followed by a 10-week tour. Most roles are adult- and college-age, with three children — two girls (ages 8 and 15) and one boy (11). Actors will be paid.
Open auditions will be held March 1 from 3 to 10 p.m., and March 3 from 4 to 6 p.m. at Liken Studios, 512 E. 1860 South in Provo, near the Novell building. Actors will be required to give a one-minute dramatic monologue and sing 16-32 measures of a contemporary show tune. A photo and acting resume is requested.
On alternating nights, the same cast will perform "The White Star," a sequel written by "Saturday's Warrior" author and producer Doug Stewart with music by Janice Kapp Perry. For more information about auditions, call 435-668-5702 or e-mail dstew66@gmail.com.
Blanket effort warms up in N.C.
Kim and Kevin Wilden, members of the Hickory North Carolina Stake, helped kick off "Project Linus" in the Statesville, N.C., area last month. According to the Statesville Record and Landmark, the "blanketeers" handed out 15 handmade blankets to police, fire and EMS stations in Troutman, N.C., on Jan. 26.
"We'd like every patrol car, whether it be police, sheriff or emergency services, to have a blanket," Kevin Wilden told the Statesville newspaper.
Last November, the Wildens helped form the Davie County Chapter of Project Linus, named after the Peanuts character. The service organization provides volunteer-made blankets for children who are experiencing serious illness or other trauma.
