Washington County Sheriff's deputies are investigating what appears to be a murder-suicide in the tiny border town of New Harmony.
Investigators said it began when a woman called Cedar City's 911 dispatch center about 8 a.m. Monday, saying she had shot her husband.
"This woman had shot her husband and intended to shoot herself," Washington County Sheriff's Lt. Jake Adams said Monday. "We sent our deputies. Iron County sent their deputies. We had hoped to arrive in time to render some sort of aid to the man she shot and her."
When deputies arrived at the home, they found both people dead from apparent gunshot wounds, Adams said.
Authorities would not release the names of the victims until Tuesday, after family members had been notified. Adams said he was unaware of a history of domestic violence involving the couple.
The couple's bodies have been sent to the Utah State Medical Examiner's Office in Salt Lake City for autopsies.
