The American styles are dances that developed in the United States. The International styles were developed in other countries. The styles are then separated into categories.

The American style features American Smooth and American Rhythm and the International style is divided into Standard and Latin.

The American Smooth usually pertains to the Standard style that includes gliding dances, such as the waltz and fox trot. The American Rhythm features dances with rhythm and sometimes overlaps with the International Latin style.

The International Latin is a rhythm-based style that features the samba, rumba, cha-cha and pasodoble..

The International Standard, called Modern in England, includes the smoother gliding dances.
