The Deseret Morning News recognized employees for service and outstanding achievement at its 37th annual awards luncheon on Wednesday at the Joseph Smith Memorial Building.

Editor in Chief Joe Cannon presented awards to staffers who had achieved benchmarks of 15 to 35 years of service and special recognition honors to writers and photographers who excelled in a year rife with big, breaking-news stories.

Cannon noted the exceptionally busy news year that was 2007 and honored his staff for exemplary work.

Rarely has the paper seen a year with more major breaking-news stories — often that required difficult, on-the-ground reporting, ever-watchful photojournalism, dedication from many individuals-reporters, editors, photographers, designers — and often odd, awkward and long out-of-town shifts to give our readers sterling coverage, Cannon said.
