Budget bills grinding towards end of session

SHARE Budget bills grinding towards end of session

The House and Senate were debating major budget bills Tuesday, but the process was stalled because legislators cancelled an Executive Appropriations meeting to approve the spending.

Also on hold were several small fiscal note bills for items such as funding for the Utah Summer Games in Cedar City and money for a study of a road over Utah Lake.

Most of the major budget bills passed through either the House or Senate with few amendments. Rep. Cory Holdaway, R-Taylorsville attempted to amend HB2 to give uniform funding opportunities for engineering programs at state universities and colleges.

His amendment failed.

"If you're going to redo this (funding request), let's go back and redo all of the others," said Rep. Ron Bigelow, R-West Valley, the House budget chair in response to Holdaway's request for a change.

Legislators must meet today in Executive Appropriations to endorse the budget bills and fiscal note bills in order for those measures to pass. The session will end at midnight.
