A man with a gun is believed to have entered East High School Wednesday and attempted to lure a female student to him, according to police.

About 9 a.m. a girl was walking from the second floor to the first floor of the school, 840 S. 1300 East, using the stairwell on the northeast side of the building, said Salt Lake police detective Jeff Bedard. Classes were in session, but the girl apparently had a hall pass, he said.

When the girl reached the first floor, she noticed a man standing between the two sets of doors leading in and out of the school. The man tried to wave the girl over, Bedard said.

"She says, 'no,' he lifts up his sweatshirt and she sees a handgun tucked in his waistband," he said.

The girl then ran back to class and told the teacher what happened. But by the time the teacher returned to the entrance to investigate, the man was gone.

School surveillance video showed a man matching the description given by the student leaving the building and getting into a car. The man was described as being approximately 30 years old, possibly Hispanic, wearing a gray colored hoodie, sweatshirt and jeans. He was last seen driving a two-door black colored vehicle with a large spoiler.

A spokesman for the Salt Lake School District said officials have passed the man's description to all of the district's principals.

"The best thing we can do right now is have a large number of people be our eyes and ears," said district spokesman Jason Olsen.

The school does not have any plans to boost security in light of Wednesday's incident, he said.

"Safety at the school is very good," Olsen said. "To borrow a quote from an old friend, safety is not a test you can cram for the night before. It's something you have to practice and use every single day."
