Belinda Jensen's efforts to be the best parent she knows how to be, coupled with her community service, should be commended (Readers' Forum, April 9). Our country needs more parents who are actively engaged in the education of their children. I agree that our children receive lifelong values and education at home as well as at school. Parents do have the right and obligation to teach their children basic values like love and compassion, and they do so best by example.

Unfortunately, too many parents have limited information about what to do if their child is gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender. Ms. Jensen concluded that having a gay child might compromise her son's ability to enjoy the fruits of marriage, family life and Ms. Jensen's ability to be a grandparent. Were parents to have all the information available to them, they'd know that gay children can look forward to the day they will be able to get married. And many gay and lesbian people today enjoy the blessings of family life — providing their parents with the grandchildren they have often dreamt of.
