• Loser: We can all hope the people who stole two pit bull pups from breeder Lindsey Martinez are brought to justice. Pit bulls have a bad reputation, but that is mainly because some people abuse them and train them to be aggressive. Martinez trains the dogs for professional dog shows.
The good news is both dogs were returned by a third party after news broke about the theft, and Salt Lake County sheriff's deputies have strong leads in the case.
• Winner: When it comes to raising funds, no community college in the nation does it better than Salt Lake Community College. It $26.4 million raised last year was $9 million above the nearest competitor.
Much of this is the result of donations from businessman, Jazz owner and philanthropist Larry H. Miller, who has built a satellite campus. But the college could not succeed in attracting money if it wasn't also successful in providing a quality education.
