Johan Jacob Jongsma

1913 ~ 2008

Johan Jacob Jongsma, our beloved husband, father, grandfather and brother, passed away peacefully April 9, 2008 in St. George at the age of 95. Jake was born March 16, 1913 in Murray, Utah, to Jan Jongsma and Maria DeBry. He was proud of his Dutch heritage. He attended Salt Lake City schools, and had a fun and innocent childhood, caddying at the old Salt Lake Country Club on the current site of Forest Dale Golf Course, ice skating on the Nibley Park pond and driving his parents' Model T Ford well before he had his driver's license.

During the midst of the Depression he worked as a member of the Civilian Conservation Corps, where he helped build much of the infrastructure of what became Zion's National Park. Jake sent almost all the money he earned during that time to his mother and father to help them financially so they wouldn't lose their house.

Upon his return from work in Southern Utah, he met Margaret Robinson ("I saw her on the dance floor at Saltair, and she was the prettiest girl I'd ever seen."). They married on July 21, 1936, and their union was later solemnized in the Salt Lake Temple. She died in 2006 after 70 years of marriage.

Jake had a strong testimony of the gospel of Jesus Christ and wanted his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren to understand that. Jake spent his adult life working as a painting contractor. He derived much joy driving around the Wasatch Front, pointing out places he had painted, sites as varied as LDS chapels, post offices and the Cottonwood Mall. He also enjoyed camping, spending time outdoors, flying small planes and working on cars. Following his retirement, Jake and Margaret gladly accepted three grandchildren into their home, kids they raised as their own. He was a terrific grandpa.

Thanks to Hospice Intermountain Home Care of St. George. Those who assisted Jake in his final days were kind and made his short stay there very comfortable.

Jake is survived by his three children: David, Gun Barrel, Texas; Deanne, (Starr, deceased), Salt Lake City; Jeff, (Heidi), Salt Lake City. He is also survived by six grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one brother and five sisters. Ann Jongsma Weaver resides in Bountiful, Utah.

Funeral services will be Monday, April 14 at 12 p.m. at Larkin Sunset Lawn Mortuary, 2350 East 1300 South. Friends and family may call one hour prior to the service. Interment, Larkin Sunset Lawn.
