New flu cases have dropped from their peak in late February, but as of April 12, nearly 500 Utahns have been hospitalized, mostly with type A.

The weekly online update at health.utah.gov notes that in some parts of the state, influenza-like levels are beginning to decrease.

Although hospitalizations due to influenza are reportable to the Utah Department of Health year-round, active statewide surveillance of flu activity will end May 17, said Charla Haley, a department spokeswoman.

Of the 491 hospitalizations which were lab-confirmed influenza, 71 percent were type A, 21 percent type B and 8 percent unknown.
