Two planes crashed in separate incidents in San Juan County Thursday. In both incidents there were only minor or no injuries.
The first accident happened about 10:30 a.m. at the Blanding Airport. A Cessna from California was attempting to land when it overturned for an unknown reason, according to a statement from the county sheriff's office. Both the pilot and a passenger escaped injury.
A short time later, the Civil Air Patrol spotted a downed plane at Zahn Bay on the San Juan River off of Lake Powell. Two people were standing outside the plane when it was spotted, according to the sheriff's office.
The plane attempted a landing in a closed backcountry area and flipped once it hit the ground, according to the National Parks Service. The pilot was flown with minor injuries to a hospital in Grand Junction, Colo. The passenger was not injured.
The incident, including why the plane tried to land in a restricted area, was still under investigation.
