Utah

SOFTBALL: The Utes play their final homestand of the season against BYU on Friday and Saturday. The weekend games are a battle for first place in the Mountain West Conference. Seniors Meghan Crouse, Kristie Keller, Kelly Matthews, Diana Phillips and Devina Quintero will be honored following Saturday's game.

TRACK & FIELD: Coming off a solid weekend at the Drake Relays and Robinson Invitational, the Utes again split their squad for the coming weekend. Utah will be sending a group of athletes to the Arkansas Twilight on Friday, while everyone else will stay in-state for the Weber State Open on Saturday.

MEN'S GOLF: Junior Devin Daniels carded two birdies and shot a two-over par 74 to lead Utah State on the first day of competition at the 47th annual Western Athletic Conference Golf Championships in San Jose, Calif. on Monday.

Daniels, who finished second individually at the 2007 WAC Championships, is currently tied for seventh place after 18 holes, while Utah State is in seventh place as a team, along with Louisiana Tech, after shooting a 23-over par 311.

New Mexico State is leading the tournament after day one with a two-under par 286, while Boise State is in second-place after shooting a nine-over 297. Fresno State is in third-place (305), followed by San Jose State (307), Nevada (308), Idaho (309), Utah State (311), Louisiana Tech (311), and Hawaii (324).

TRACK & FIELD: USU's Erin Stratton has been named the Western Athletic Conference Women's Track Athlete of the Week it was announced Monday by the conference office for the week of April 21-27.

Stratton, a sophomore from Aurora, Colo., (Smoky Hills HS) ran an NCAA regional qualifying mark in 3,000-meter steeplechase at the Brutus Hamilton Invitational, in Berkeley, Calif., clocking a personal-best time of 10 minutes, 38.18 seconds to win the event.

VOLLEYBALL: The American Volleyball Coaches Association announced its 2008 AVCA Division I-II Men's Volleyball All-America Teams on Monday, and BYU seniors Russell Holmes and Ivan Perez were each awarded their third All-America honor in a row.

WOMEN'S GOLF: The NCAA Division I Women's Golf Committee announced Monday the selection of the No. 30 BYU Women's Golf Team to participate in the 2008 NCAA Women's Golf Championship Regionals. The Cougars will compete in the West regional May 8-10 at the Lincoln Hills Golf club in Lincoln, Calif., hosted by Sacramento State University.

SOFTBALL: After a hard-fought week of conference games, the Cougars (36-16 overall, 10-4 Mountain West) takes a conference break to host Northern Colorado (13-34) today at 6 p.m. before traveling to Salt Lake on Friday and Saturday to play Deseret Duel and in-state rival Utah (26-21, 9-5).

BASEBALL: Freshman righthander Justin Shutt pitched six innings of shutout ball, walked none and scattered four hits Monday in BYU's 10-5 victory over Northern Colorado.

Shutt picked up his first college victory as he successfully relieved freshman lefty Daniel Welch in the fourth when the Cougars were down 5-1. The Cougars, now 17-26, rallied behind Shutt.
