AMERICAN FORK — It's tournament time in American Fork.
For the first time since 2002, the Cavemen have wrapped up a trip to the state playoffs after snatching victory in a play-in softball game against Timpanogos 5-2.
"I have never been so happy. I've been waiting for this moment since my freshman year," said senior catcher Sandra Nessler, who'll be making her first-ever trip into the postseason.
"I just stayed confident the whole time. From the beginning I just knew we were going to win it. I don't think I lost focus the whole game," she added after dodging most of a huge celebration that landed most of her teammates in a mud puddle.
After the game, the Cavemen cheered, dog-piled, threw mud and ice and tossed each other into puddles because they had finally done what they couldn't do in years past.
"This is huge. You'd think they won a state championship," said American Fork coach Duke Sorenson as he watched the wild celebration.
Last year the Cavemen lost to Lone Peak and didn't reach the tourney. But this year they turned everything around.
The Cavemen will open up with their first state tournament game in six years at Fremont next Tuesday.
