ROOSEVELT — A 52-year-old woman is in fair condition at the University of Utah Medical Center despite being dragged and then run over by a pickup truck Sunday evening as she tried to cross U.S. Highway 40.

Marie Wolfe was using the crosswalk at the intersection of U.S. 40 and Lagoon Street in downtown Roosevelt shortly before 5:30 p.m., according to Utah Highway Patrol trooper Rex Olsen, when she was hit by a pickup truck driven by Benjamin Corey Harper.

Olsen said the 26-year-old Louisiana man was turning left onto the highway from Lagoon Street and said he did not see Wolfe in the crosswalk. After striking the woman, Harper told troopers he tried to get out of the flow of traffic by pulling to the curb.

Olsen said Harper failed to realize that Wolfe was trapped under his truck. He dragged her 76 feet before she fell free of the vehicle and was subsequently run over by the pickup, the trooper said.

Wolfe was initially taken to Uintah Basin Medical Center before being flown by medical helicopter to Salt Lake City. Olsen said the woman sustained a crushed pelvis and multiple abrasions.
