Ned Martell Vowles
1917 ~ 2008
Our beloved father and grandfather, Ned Martell Vowles, passed away on May 8, 2008 of natural causes at the age of 90, with family close about him.
Ned was born November 7, 1917 in Tooele, Utah, the last of 10 children born to Herbert Hardwick Vowles and Mary Adeline Dunn. He met his eternal sweetheart, Edna Brown Morrow, in Nashville, Tennessee, during World War II and they married December 3, 1943 in the Salt Lake Temple. He was a veteran of World War II and Korea, and resigned his commission as a Captain in the Air Force. Ned was a stalwart member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in numerous callings, including stake Sunday School superintendent, counselor in the bishopric, teacher in many auxiliaries, and member of the stake high council. He faithfully fulfilled his callings, particularly his home teaching assignments. He
retired from the Utah Department of Employment Security, and he and Edna then served as missionaries to the Singapore Mission, being assigned to Sri Lanka and India to teach microfilm operators. After Edna's death, he served a part-time mission in the Church History Department. He loved family history work, and at the age of 90 had completed indexing over 75,000 names for the Church Family History indexing program.
He is survived by six children,
Terry (Tina Cannon) West Bountiful; Rhea (Neil Jeppsen) Brigham City; Susan (Gary Smith) Gilbert, Arizona; Dennis, Sandy, Utah; Annette (Barry Hunt) Snowflake, Arizona; and
Kenneth (Janet Best) Bountiful; 24 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren. Preceded in death by his beloved wife, Edna, and their firstborn child, Charles.
We give special thanks to all who cared for Dad in his declining days, particularly family members and the staff at The Inn at Barton Creek. We will miss his strong testimony, the twinkle in his eye, and his love for his family.
