CINCINNATI — Kroger Co., which owns Smith's Marketplace grocery stores in Utah, is expanding its discount on generic drugs, offering 90-day prescriptions for $10 and covering more women's health medications.

The move comes as the Cincinnati-based grocer faces increased competition from Wal-Mart Stores Inc., which similarly expanded its own low-cost prescription program last week.

Kroger says the discounts are available beginning Wednesday in all 1,900 of its in-store pharmacies.

Last fall, Kroger and other retail chains began offering more than 300 generic drugs for $4 per prescription. The drugs offered in Kroger's expanded program include generic drugs used to treat breast cancer and osteoporosis.
