Regarding Romana A. Ruemmele's letter concerning baptism for the dead (Readers' Forum, May 12). I suggest the writer read the Apostle Paul's treatise on the Resurrection in 1 Corinthians. He is quoted in the Catholic Edition of the New Revised Standard Version of the Holy Bible, "Otherwise what will these people do who receive baptism on behalf of the dead? If the dead are not raised at all, why are people baptized on their behalf?" (I Corinthians 15:29)

We must remember that proxy baptism, ancient or modern, is only effective for those who will accept it. It is their choice, not their parents or guardians. Many may not, but some will.
