OREM — The Mountain View boys soccer team sounded the death knell for Woods Cross in the 36th minute.

Sure, there was still almost an hour to play in the first round playoff game, but the Bruins scored just before halftime and then did what they seem to do best, winning another tournament game 1-0.

Since Mark Graham became Mountain View's coach two years ago, three of his team's four tournament wins have been by the same 1-0 score. Such is the finality of scoring that first goal, that the Bruins had to feel the game was in hand, even in the first half.

"Every year has been 1-0 so far," said Graham. "Better 1-0 than 0-1. These teams are too good to beat them easily in a playoff game, but we held together well."

It was Jake Parkinson that put the ball in the net for Mountain View — his 12th goal of the season. He one-touched his shot into the far corner after Leo Saban set him up with a run deep into the box from his midfield position.

"Saban broke their team down in the midfield," said Graham. "We had a couple of quality short passes and then Leo beat a couple of guys on the dribble and laid off to Jake Parkinson."

From there it was the Mountain View defense that gives up less than half a goal per game on average. The Bruins back line was at full strength and goalkeeper Mike Chesler made the one big save he had to make to preserve the shutout.

In the 61st minute, a Woods Cross attacker lined up an uncontested shot from 12 yards out. The kick was low, hard, and on target, but Chesler dove and got enough of his left hand on it to push the ball outside the far post.

"I just stayed big and made sure my angles were covered," said Chesler. "All he had to do was just hit it on me and I got down and made the save I'm supposed to make."

That was the Warriors best chance in the second half. Later on Luis Calquin had an open header from the top of the box, but it was hit straight at the 'keeper.

"We have a solid back line," said Chesler. "All of our players in front of me are just solid. It's our goal to keep a zero on the scoreboard."

Mountain View will play Cottonwood on at 4 p.m. on Friday in its quarterfinal game.
