The U.S. Energy Department and the Environmental Protection Agency suggest many ways to improve gasoline mileage. Here are some; a more complete list is available at www.fueleconomy.gov:
• Observe the speed limit. Gas mileage decreases rapidly at speeds above 60 mph. Slowing down can save 26 cents to 86 cents per gallon at current prices.
• Remove excess weight from vehicles. An extra 100 pounds in a car can reduce gas mileage by up to 2 percent. Removing it could save 4 cents to 7 cents a gallon.
• Avoid excessive idling. Idling gets 0 miles per gallon.
• Use cruise control. Maintaining constant speed usually helps save gas.
• Keep your engine tuned. It can save up to an estimated 15 cents a gallon.
• Keep tires properly inflated. It could save up to 11 cents a gallon.
• Check and replace air filters regularly. It can improve mileage up to 10 percent, or save up to 37 cents a gallon.
• If you have two cars, drive the one that has the best mileage whenever possible.
• If you can stagger work hours to avoid peak rush hours, you will spend less time sitting in traffic and will consume less fuel.
• Take advantage of car pools and ride-share programs.
