SOCCER: BYU All-American Katie Larkin was named to the U.S. Under-23 soccer team for the prestigious Nordic Cup Tournament, scheduled July 11-22 in Sweden. The announcement came shortly after Larkin returned home from training with the team in Carson, Calif. Larkin has participated in four training camps with the national U-23 team this year. Earlier, she traveled to Germany for another stint with the U.S. team, playing against the German U-23 team and other German soccer clubs.
Larkin got the start in the game against the German U-23 team, and had an assist in a 4-2 win over German Women's Bundesliga club Crailsheim on May 20. The U.S. team won both of the games played on German soil, also defeating the German U-23 team, 1-0.
One of six forwards that went to Germany, Larkin is the lone player from BYU and the Mountain West Conference. Only 18 players traveled with the team.
In a tune-up game against the University of Portland on April 18, Larkin scored a goal in a 7-1 victory over the Pilots.
The U.S. team has won seven of the past nine Nordic Cup tournaments. The U-23 team will face national teams from Switzerland (July 15), England (July 17) and Norway (July 19). Other teams participating in the tournament include host Sweden, Finland, Germany and Scotland. The tournament championship game will be played July 21.
MEN'S CLUB SOCCER: The Cougars (4-4-1) beat the Ogden Outlaws (3-4-2) Tuesday night, 2-0. Ogden had a good opportunity to take control of the game in the fifth minute when Outlaw forward Kennan Powell had a one-on-one shot against BYU goalkeeper Brandon Gilliam, but struck the ball just outside of the left post.
The Cougars also had a good chance to score just before halftime, but BYU midfielder Steve Magleby sailed the ball over the goal. Zack DeFrancis found the back of the net off a cross from Garrett Losee in the 63rd minute. The Cougars put the Outlaws away in the 90th minute when Steven Fellows slid a ball across the Outlaws' goal line and Scott Heaton slammed it into the back of the net.
The Cougars will take the rest of the week off, and then they will be headed to Washington to play the Spokane Spiders on June 26th, and the Cascade Surge on the 28th.
