Three families are without homes after a two-alarm fire ripped through an apartment complex Sunday afternoon.

Firefighters were called out to a 24-unit complex at 4136 S. Oak Meadows Drive (1600 West) just before 1 p.m., said Unified Fire Authority spokesman Chad Simons. The flames were knocked down within 30 minutes but not before the fire caused about $100,000 in damage. No injuries were reported.

Utilities were shut off to 12 of the units, but Simons said residents would be able to return to all but three apartments Sunday evening. The Red Cross was providing shelter for the affected families.

Investigators believe the fire started in an apartment's attic but were not immediately sure what sparked the blaze.
