PROVO — A Brigham Young University student who was pulled out of a Provo swimming pool Thursday died Friday morning.

Two men pulled 19-year-old Oumar Samake, from the West African nation of Mali, out of the pool at the Glenwood Apartments at 1565 N. University Ave. after they spotted him on the bottom of the pool under 8 feet of water. The men told police they saw Samake swimming in the pool earlier while they were sitting in a hot tub but became concerned when they didn't hear any splashing anymore.

BYU officials said Samake had just finished studying English at the ELC program at BYU and that he was admitted to begin studying as a full-time student at the school starting this fall.

After they pulled Samake out of the water, police say one of the two men started CPR until paramedics arrived. He was then transported to Utah Valley Region Medical Center, where he died Friday morning, according to a hospital spokeswoman.

While the witnesses didn't know how long Samake had been under water, they guessed it was only a short amount of time. Police said the incident appeared to be accidental and said Samake was believed to be an inexperienced swimmer.
