OREM — A teen speeding down a residential street ended up slamming through a basement window of a home.

The 16-year-old boy ran off the road near 95 N. 1140 West on Thursday around 1 p.m. and came up over the curb and across the lawn of a two-story home, said Orem Police Lt. Doug Edwards.

Three children and two adult women were in the home at the time but were upstairs, Edwards said.

Two of those children were watching TV directly above the window the car drove through and were thrown off the couch due to the force of the crash, Edwards said.

No one in the home was injured, Edwards said. Damage to the home was around $15,000.

The car was pulled out by a tow truck, which took more than two hours.

The teen initially told police the brakes had failed, but a later inspection of the car by city officials revealed the brakes were fine, Edwards said. The youth was cited for reckless driving.

The driver was not injured, but a 16-year-old girl riding with the boy was taken to the hospital for treatment of cuts and abrasions.
