Hessman's homers pace U.S. squad

DURHAM, N.C. (AP) — Mike Hessman hit two of the United States' four home runs Monday night, and the Americans capped their stateside preparations for Beijing by scoring nine runs in the fifth inning of a 17-5 exhibition rout of Canada in a game shortened to seven innings.

Matt LaPorta homered for the third time in the four-game series, and Terry Tiffee drove in three runs and also connected for the second straight game for the U.S., which scored in each inning and took the final three games of the four-game tuneup for the Olympics after they lost the opener in 10 innings.

The Americans hit 11 homers during the series and outscored Canada 33-8 in the final three games. Now it's on to China, with both teams scheduled to travel to Washington, D.C., today.

Judge again asked to shut down Web site

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — The U.S. Olympic Committee asked a federal judge Monday for the second time to shut down a Web site it alleges is fraudulently selling tickets to the Beijing Games.

Lawyers for the USOC want the judge to permanently disable beijingticketing.com, which they contend has scammed numerous U.S. residents out of thousands of dollars by falsely promising to deliver tickets to the Games.

The site was apparently disabled by its operators Monday, but the lawyers want the court order to make the take down permanent. A USOC lawyer said company managers notified customers via e-mail Monday morning that the promised tickets would not be delivered. The e-mail advised patrons to contact their credit card companies.

A federal judge in Phoenix last week ordered another Web site shut down for allegedly operating a similar scam.

The Springer Tournee is an annual summer competition that brings nordic ski clubs together for a weekend of ski jumping and nordic combined competition.

Hughes, an athlete on the U.S. Ski Jumping Team, kicked the weekend of competition off on Friday night with a win in what would be the first of two jumping competitions on the K90 hill with a 90.5-meter jump.

"It gives me a confidence boost going into these summer competitions. I'm just excited to see how everything goes," Hughes said.

Jessica Jerome and Alissa Johnson, also members of the U.S. squad, followed Hughes in second and third place for the day.
