LOGAN (AP) — Bear River health officials say three Cache County mosquito pools have tested positive for West Nile virus for the first time this summer.

Department environmental scientist Grant Koford says the diseased pools were in Logan, Wellsville and Young Ward.

Health officials conduct two types of surveillance to track West Nile, including trapping and testing mosquitoes from 14 locations across the county and testing sentinel chicken flocks.

Koford says residents should take precautions against contracting the virus by wearing long-sleeved shirts and pants when outdoors and using insect repellent that contains DEET.

Homeowners should also remove any standing water on their property to prevent mosquito breeding.
