For weeks now, as I turned to your opinion page, I've been accosted with the political cartoon of soldiers holding a flag that says "The Surge Worked" and a slumping Barack Obama holding a white flag. The whole conversation about whether the surge worked is a gross oversimplification of what is happening in Iraq.

There are only two conversations that we should be having about Iraq as we decide between John McCain and Obama: Who was right about whether we should have invaded Iraq, and when and how should we leave? How you answer the first question determines whether you want America to continue to pursue a militaristic foreign policy agenda (invasion, regime change and occupation) or a more traditional agenda that includes military action when we are directly threatened.

Please stop this nonsense about "The Surge Worked." It's like arguing about who was right regarding the caliber of the rifles soldiers use.
