A man has been charged with abusing his twin infant daughters after doctors at Primary Children's Medical Center found signs of "severe trauma" and "repeated physical abuse."

In early June, the mother brought her twin infants to Primary Children's Medical Center and told doctors she noticed one was bleeding from the mouth and the other had an eye infection, according to court documents.

Doctors found one child had a cut on her gums, cuts on her scalp, burned fingers on her right hand, puncture wounds on her thigh and a fractured rib, according to court documents. A follow-up exam two weeks later revealed three additional rib fractures.

The other infant had bruises on her stomach and cuts on her scalp, according to court documents. A doctor told police the injuries are rarely seen outside the context of severe trauma and indicate repeated physical abuse. The doctor also said she doubts the injuries were the result of "non-accidental trauma."

The mother told Salt Lake City police the children's 19-year-old father was abusive toward her and the girls. She also said she noticed injuries about three months earlier when she would leave the children with the father at their apartment near 200 West and 400 North.

When police spoke with the man he admitted to having a bad temper and treating the children roughly.

Two counts of child abuse have been filed against the man. Bail has been set at $50,000.
