SALISBURY, Md. — Thousands of volunteers are spending Christmas searching for a missing Maryland girl who authorities believe was abducted by a registered sex offender.
More than 1,000 volunteers lined up outside Arthur W. Perdue Stadium in Salisbury at 7 a.m. to help search for 11-year-old Sarah H. Foxwell. Officials say the number quickly swelled to nearly 3,000.
Wicomico County State's Attorney Davis Ruark says police have more than enough volunteers now.
Thirty-year-old Thomas J. Leggs Jr. has been charged with kidnapping Sarah. Leggs, who is listed on the Maryland and Delaware sex offender registries, is a former boyfriend of the girl's aunt, who is her legal guardian.
He is being represented by the public defender's office, which has not returned a call seeking comment.
