PHOENIX — Some north Phoenix neighbors vow to fight a proposed Mormon temple by going to the public.

Neighbors living near 51st Avenue and Pinnacle Peak Road say they will collect petition signatures to get the issue on the ballot.

City officials said opponents would need just under 10,000 legitimate names of registered Phoenix voters to bring the issue to a vote.

During a Phoenix City Council zoning meeting, the Council voted unanimously Wednesday to allow The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to add 10 feet of height to its proposed temple.

The proposed building would stand 40 feet high, despite typical residential zoning laws that prevent buildings from exceeding 30 feet in height.

An attorney for the church said his clients are "going to make every effort to make peace with the neighbors."
