Located on the shores of Lake Erie, Fairport Harbor is the site where the Grand River empties into the lake. With a distance of about 12 miles to Kirtland, Ohio, this site became an important crossroads for missionaries and other travelers going to or coming from Kirtland. People could come and go on Lake Erie and connect to the Erie Canal in Buffalo, N.Y., which took people and freight to the Hudson River in Albany, N.Y. The Hudson took travelers to and from New York City and the Atlantic Ocean.
