The number: 4.1M — Puerto Ricans

More live in states than on island

Most Puerto Ricans do not reside in Puerto Rico. In 2007, the Census Bureau's American Community Survey set the number of Puerto Ricans living in the 50 U.S. states and the District of Columbia at 4.1million, slightly greater than the entire population of Puerto Rico (3.9 million), a U.S. territory. About two-thirds of the Puerto Ricans residing in the 50 states and D.C. were born there (2.7 million). Most of the other third were born in Puerto Rico (1.4 million), but 48,000 Puerto Ricans living in the 50 states and D.C. were born outside of the U.S. or Puerto Rico, and are the only Puerto Ricans to be considered foreign born. Puerto Ricans are the second-largest Hispanic population residing in the U.S., accounting for 9.1% of the total. But their numbers pale in comparison with the largest group ? the 29.2 million Mexican Americans who comprise 64.3% of the total Hispanic population in the U.S.
