The John A. Moran Eye Center at the University of Utah will receive funding to join the National Eye Evaluation Research Network.

Established by the National Neurovision Research Institute, the NEER Network is a collaboration of five clinical treatment and evaluation centers across the nation to advance the science of therapeutic and preventive interventions for retinal degenerative diseases through clinical trials and other clinically relevant research.

Stephen Rose, chief research officer at the Foundation Fighting Blindness, lauded the move, saying the Moran Eye Center "is world-class and brings the utmost expertise, knowledge and efficiency in moving potential sight-saving treatments through clinical trials and out to the people who need them."

NEER is working to develop standard protocols for data collection and patient databases to allow for timely identification of eligible patients for clinical trials, along with training military ophthalmologists and teaching the latest technologies, diagnostics and treatments.
