Holladay candidate's pool vandalized

HOLLADAY — The pool cover of City Councilman E. Barry Topham was destroyed over the weekend in what the mayoral candidate believes was an act of political vandalism.

Topham, the only competitor of incumbent Councilman Dennis Webb, said the cover was clearly sliced with a knife and will have to be replaced at a cost of $1,300. He has offered a $500 reward for information leading to the conviction of the vandal.

"To do something like this is pretty outrageous," he said. "It's felonious."

Salt Lake County Sheriff's Capt. Chris Bertram called the case unusual and said it has been turned over to an investigator. So far, no suspects have been identified.

Bertram added that vandalism such as toilet-papering and graffiti are common in Holladay, but it's rare for a criminal to go into a backyard and destroy property.
