The Pretenders lead singer Chrissie Hynde is taking some time off from her world tour Monday to put her animal rights sentiments to music.

Hynde will kick off a national advertising campaign in front of a McDonald's in downtown Salt Lake City, protesting the fast-food chain's slaughter practices. The singer developed the campaign, titled "i'm hatin' it," in conjunction with People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals.

The animal rights group says U.S. suppliers for McDonald's scald birds to death in defeathering tanks, among other things.

PETA will distribute "Unhappy Meals" containing mangled plastic chickens and "blood"-filled ketchup packets at the protest. Hynde hopes to spawn a McDonald's boycott.

The demonstration will take place at noon at 242 S. 700 East.
