PROVO, Utah — Studying the Savior is more than figuring out where he walked or what he wore.In studying Jesus Christ to become like him, his personality and traits need to be looked at, said D. Kelly Ogden, a BYU professor of ancient scripture, at Campus Education Week on Aug. 21. His class was called "I am ... You Be! How to Live: Lessons from Jesus Christ.""Man is to be as he is," Ogden said during the Monday session. "He wants us to become the light of the world."Ogden shared a dozen traits of Jesus Christ during the session.Be holy"What is our ultimate objective?" Ogden asked. "To get to the Celestial Kingdom. That's the most common answer."We must become as Heavenly Father is," he added. "The place will take care of itself."Four things that will help with being holy are daily scripture study, daily sincere prayer, serving, and going regularly and frequently to the temple. On the outside of every LDS temple is inscribed in stone "Holiness to the Lord. House of the Lord.""It's not just a house of holiness," Ogden said. "It is a holy house." Be happy"God is a jovial, lively person," Ogden said. Many times people can get down because of all of the bad news that seems to be so prevalent."Jesus said to be of good cheer" because he has overcome the world, Ogden said. There are just some things that we don't need to be concerned with."We have a duty to be positive," Ogden said. "No to just enjoy (happiness) but to produce it." Be spiritually-mindedAfter he was baptized, Jesus went to the wilderness to be with God."The devil had no effect on him because he was so full of the Spirit," Ogden said. "Be full of the spirit like our exemplar and we'll be OK."Being full of the spirit takes a bit of work studying the scriptures, praying and being taught in the temple. It also means turning out focus from the world."We all work hard to get things knowing that we are going to leave it all," he added. Be humbleOne of the best examples of humility is John the Baptist, Ogden said.John the Baptist recognized the voice of the prophets and prepared his disciples to accept Jesus Christ, knowing that when Jesus came, John's mission would decrease."There was no pride, no ego," Ogden said. "He was full of humility." Be knowledgeable"We need more than a punch-and-cookies testimony," Ogden said.In Kirtland, Ohio, when the School of the Prophets was established, they studied much more than religion. History, English, grammar, languages and sciences were part of the curriculum.More knowledge is available in the temple."As important as Joseph Smith and the Book of Mormon are, they aren't mentioned in the temple," he added. Be serviceable"We all have been called on a mission," Ogden said of losing ourselves in service. "We've been called to give and give and give."Jesus taught that the greatest should be the servant of all.In serving, we need to help create a spiritual atmosphere for other people. Be peacefulJesus taught his followers to not let our hearts be troubled or afraid. When Jesus spoke of leaving this world, he gave peace to his followers.Peace can be found in reading the scriptures, praying, serving and learning at the temple."Peace is not freedom from conflict," he said. "But it's the calm assurance of being in good standing with God" and having a good relationship with Heavenly Father."Satan is not on the winning side," Ogden said. Be fruitfulBeing fruitful is being joyful, Ogden said. What we do with our time and energy will show in the fruits of our labors. The rising generation has a fear of boredom and running out of things to do.But there is always someone to serve.Ask just two questions. "Who can I help and how can I help them?" he said. Be obedientJesus was about his Father's work."He loved the Father and he was obedient," Ogden said. There is a promise in Doctrine and Covenants 82:10 that when we are obedient to the commandments, we will be blessed. The converse is also true."You almost obey, you almost get blessed," Ogden said.Odgen, who has served as president of missionary training centers in Provo and in Central America, said he could quickly tell which young men would be good missionaries just through their obedience. Be long-suffering"We weren't sent here to be comfortable, but to be challenged," Ogden said. "The Savior's crown of thorns came before his crown of glory."Trials come before happiness, as cited in Alma 7:5, Alma 26:27 and Doctrine and Covenants 58:4."Wonderful things come through trials," Ogden said. "Life is a contact sport."Jesus experienced trials and suffering. "How else can we expect to be made perfect?" Ogden asked.Being long-suffering also means to be slow to anger, slow to be provoked, not easily tempted, not selfish and willing to endure trials.Use the gift of the Holy Ghost during these times to endure well, Ogden said. Be persevering"We have incredible experiences in our lives and then have lows," Ogden said. "Jesus and Joseph (Smith) are great ones to emulate."Look to the experience of Zion's Camp in the Doctrine and Covenants. Those who persevered were refined in the camp. Be dedicated"Jesus requires our heart," Ogden said. "He knows that the only way back to the Father is through him."Make everything you do a part of the Lord's work. Be Christ-like"In the final analysis, it's between you and God," Ogden said.Remember the Primary song "I'm trying to be Like Jesus," Ogden added."His life is the perfect lesson," he said.
