NEW YORK — Jeff Francoeur homered and Mike Pelfrey outpitched a struggling Cole Hamels, leading New York to a 4-2 victory over Philadelphia on Friday night.
Francoeur had three hits and Francisco Rodriguez escaped a ninth-inning jam for New York.
Pelfrey (9-8) tossed six solid innings and got strong relief work from New York's bullpen, making him 3-0 in four starts against Philadelphia this season.
Pedro Feliciano and Brian Stokes combined for two scoreless innings before handing the ball to Rodriguez. With runners at the corners, the All-Star closer struck out Chase Utley and Ryan Howard for his 27th save.
Hamels (7-8) allowed 10 hits in five innings.
PIRATES 5, REDS 2: At Pittsburgh, CharlieMorton pitched into the seventh inning after a disastrous start in his previous outing and Pittsburgh won its fourth straight. GarrettJones and LastingsMilledge homered for the Pirates, who were in a 1-12 slide before their winning streak. Morton (3-6) allowed two runs and six hits in 6 1-3 innings to earn his first win since July 18. He left his previous start last Friday against Chicago in the second inning and was charged with 10 runs and seven hits in a 17-2 loss. ChrisDickerson had two hits and drove in a run for the Reds, who have lost six of seven. MicahOwings (6-12) allowed five runs and five hits over five innings in his first start since he was placed on the disabled list July 27 with right shoulder tightness. Jones hit a three-run homer in the third, his 14th — most in the majors among rookies, despite his June 30 callup. MattCapps finished for his 23rd save.
BREWERS 7, NATIONALS 3: At Washington, PrinceFielder and CaseyMcGehee homered, and Milwaukee broke a four-game losing streak. BradenLooper (11-6) allowed two runs over six innings for the Brewers. Washington is 0-4 since making Monday night's deadline to sign No. 1 overall pick StephenStrasburg, and even the midweek promotion of MikeRizzo to general manager failed to make a difference on the field. Rookie J.D. Martin (2-3) allowed a two-run home run to Fielder in the first and a solo shot by McGehee in the fourth. Fielder's was his 33rd homer and gave him a majors-leading 110 RBIs. FelipeLopez added a two-out RBI single in the seventh, and the Brewers added three runs in the ninth off reliever JorgeSosa. Washington's AdamDunn hit his 32nd homer and RyanZimmerman hit his career-high 25th.
ASTROS 1, DIAMONDBACKS 0: At Houston, RoyOswalt allowed three hits in seven innings and Houston handed Arizona its sixth straight loss.
Oswalt (7-4) improved to 9-1 in 11 career starts against the Diamondbacks, including a 7-0 mark in seven starts at MinuteMaidPark.JeffKeppinger drove in the only run for the Astros, who have won four of five.
LaTroyHawkins pitched the eighth and JoseValverde finished the four-hitter for his 19th save this season and third in three games.
YusmeiroPetit (2-8) lost for the fifth time in seven starts. He allowed four hits in six innings after giving up a total of 10 earned runs in his previous two starts.
The Diamondbacks were shut out for the eighth time this season and have lost their last eight road games.
DODGERS 2, CUBS 1: At Los Angeles, RandyWolf combined with two relievers on a one-hitter and hit a two-run double in the Dodgers win. The Cubs' lone hit was RyanTheriot's RBI single with two outs in the third. The NLWest-leading Dodgers recorded consecutive victories for the first time since Aug. 10-11. They won two straight at home for the first time since a five-game winning streak from July 18-22. Wolf (8-6) allowed one run, struck out five and walked two in seven innings for his third consecutive victory. JonathanBroxton pitched a perfect ninth for his 27th save. Wolf gave himself a 2-0 lead with the RBI double to center in the second, tying a career high with his 11th RBI of the season. Rookie RandyWells (9-6) gave up two runs and seven hits in 6 2-3 innings, struck out three and walked two as Chicago lost for the ninth time in 12 games.
PADRES 4, CARDINALS 0: At San Diego, NickHundley hit a three-run homer and ClaytonRichard won his third straight decision for San Diego. The NLCentral-leading Cardinals had beaten San Diego nine straight times, including a three-game sweep last weekend, and 17 times in 22 games. Cardinals starter KyleLohse (5-8) left after straining his left groin running out a single in the fifth inning. Richard (3-0) was pulled after a leadoff walk in the seventh. He held St. Louis to five hits while striking out six and walking three. Three relievers held St. Louis hitless the rest of the way. It was SanDiego's third shutout, tying the Padres with Chicago and Washington for the fewest in the NL. Hundley's homer with no outs in the second was his first since May 19. Hundley was on the disabled list from June 18-Aug. 12 with a sprained left wrist.
GIANTS 6, ROCKIES 3: At Denver, JonathanSanchez tossed five solid innings and AaronRowand hit a three-run homer for San Francisco. Sanchez (6-10) allowed an unearned run and two hits to win for just the third time since his no-hitter against San Diego on July 10. He struck out eight and walked four. The Rockies had won 25 of their first 35 games under JimTracy, who took over from fired manager ClintHurdle on May 29. AaronCook (10-6) was removed after he walked NateSchierholtz on four pitches leading off the fourth. JoshFogg came in and gave up Rowand's 11th homer after TravisIshikawa reached on second baseman IanStewart's error. Cook labored allowed four earned runs and three hits with four walks.
MARLINS 5, BRAVES 3: At Atlanta, HanleyRamirez, the NationalLeague's leading hitter, extended his career-high hitting streak to 16 games with three hits, including a two-run homer, to lead the Marlins to a rain-delayed victory over the Braves. AnibalSanchez (2-4), who came off the 60-day disabled list before the game, pitched six-plus innings for Florida. The right-hander, on the disabled list twice this season with a sprained right shoulder, allowed one run and two hits, walked two and struck out seven. He left with a 5-0 lead after allowing a leadoff double in the seventh to RyanChurch. The game was delayed 2 hours, 28 minutes by thunder, lightning and rain with the Marlins batting in the ninth with one out. It resumed at 12:44 a.m.
