A former car-dealership employee has been charged with a felony after he was accused of stealing a car from his former workplace and attempting to drive it to Florida, court documents state.

Two employees told police that the 20-year-old man took a spare key to a 2004 Lincoln from Karl Malone Toyota at 11453 S. Lone Peak Park Way, according to court documents.

Though the suspect, a Sandy resident, didn't have permission to take the vehicle, the other employees didn't realize the car was missing until the man's stepfather called. The stepfather told the dealership that his stepson had taken their car and was on his way to Kansas, charging documents state.

Draper police officers were able to reach the man by phone, and he told them that he had stolen the car and was driving to Florida. He was later caught and is now being charged with receiving or transferring a stolen motor vehicle, which is a second-degree felony.
