Letters by folks like Gordon LaFleur (Readers' Forum, Aug. 19) demonstrate the elitism of liberals. In his letter, Gordon refers to John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, Patrick Henry, George Washington and even Abraham Lincoln as being "liberals of their day." These men were all about freedom and limited government. They tried to organize a government with limited power, with checks and balances to reduce or even eliminate the governments influence in our lives.

Rather than refer to them as liberal, the term "libertarian" would better describe the government they established and nourished.
